About Château Comtal de Rochefort

The Château Comtal occupies a limestone promontory above the river Lomme, in the centre of Rochefort. The first written record, from 1155, calls the place "Rocha Fortis", the strong rock, from which the town takes its name. Excavations uncovered the foundations of a square tower of the original castle, linked to the Montaigu family.

Rochefort lay at a crossroads, and the castle controlled that route. In 1285, Thierry de Walcourt granted a charter (foral) to the inhabitants. In the 16th century, Count Louis de Stolberg strengthened the defences with a large terrace for cannon, and in the early 17th century the Loewenstein family turned the fortress into a court residence.

After the French Revolution the castle was confiscated and sold. The new owners sold the furniture and, later, the stones themselves, and the site was abandoned for more than a century. The ruins have been protected as a Walloon monument since 1966 and have welcomed visitors since 1987.

Today the visit follows the walls and courtyards, with information about the site's history and archaeology. On some weekends there are guided visits with costumed characters aimed at families. From the top you can see how the town grew squeezed between the castle and the hill.
