About Le Hérou
The Hérou is a rock ridge that cuts the Ourthe valley near the village of Nadrin, southeast of La Roche-en-Ardenne. It is about 1.5 kilometres long and 80 to 90 metres high, and forces the river to make tight turns around it.
From the top and along the surrounding trails you can see the hills, the slopes covered with trees and pines, the rock faces and the meanders of the Ourthe. In the past the rock was almost bare; today the trees hide one or two of the river's bends.
The landscape was protected by royal decree on 15 October 1937 and was listed among Wallonia's major heritage sites. Locals called the place Li Cresse di laid saut in Walloon. According to tradition, a herald announced court sentences for Nadrin from the top of the rock.
The Hérou is within the Parc naturel des Deux Ourthes, and marked trails link Nadrin to the riverbank. The descent to the water is steep and requires sturdy footwear.

Practical information
Cidade Turismo reviews its information regularly, but something may have changed. Check with the place before planning your trip.
How much time to set aside
Half an hour for the viewpoints near the road. Two to three hours for a trail to the Ourthe's bank and back.
Best time
In spring and autumn, when low light brings out the relief and the slopes change colour. Avoid days just after heavy rain, when the trails are slippery.
How to get there
It is on Rue du Hérou, in Nadrin, municipality of Houffalize, southeast of La Roche-en-Ardenne. Access is by car, heading to Nadrin and then on foot via marked trails. There is no practical public transport to the site.
Tip
Do the Hérou and the Nisramont lake on the same car outing, as they are on the same stretch of the Ourthe. Bring water and a snack: there is nowhere to buy near the rock. Pick up the trail map at the La Roche or Houffalize tourist office.
