About Char Achilles M10

In the centre of La Roche-en-Ardenne, a genuine British armoured vehicle serves as a monument. It is an M10 Achilles, a tank destroyer armed with the 17-pounder gun, used by the British army from 1944.

The vehicle honours the 1st Northamptonshire Yeomanry, the regiment that supported the 51st Highland Division, the Scottish division, in the Battle of the Ardennes. After the infantry of the 1st Black Watch, it was the first tank to enter the town during the liberation on 11 January 1945.

The armoured vehicle was restored by the Musée de la Bataille des Ardennes together with the town council and inaugurated as a monument on the 55th anniversary of the liberation. A plaque tells the regiment's story.

La Roche preserves other war landmarks, such as an American Sherman tank and the memorial to the 82nd Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, but the Achilles is the most photographed.
