About Belvédère du Deister
The Deister is the hill that closes the valley of La Roche-en-Ardenne beside the castle. From the viewpoint at the top, the town can be seen in full: the slate roofs, the ruins of the Château féodal on the rock and the bend the Ourthe makes around the centre.
Access is on foot only. The waymarked trails numbers 4 and 11, called the Deister walks, climb the slope. A narrow path starts near the chapel Sainte-Marguerite and leads to the viewpoint. The climb is short but steep.
The Deister lies within the Parc naturel des Deux Ourthes, a protected area that covers the valleys around the town. The forest is composed of beech, oak and conifers, and the trails continue to other valley viewpoints, such as the paragliders' spot.
It's worth combining the viewpoint with the castle and the old town on the same day, leaving the climb for late afternoon.
