About Mégalithes de Wéris
Around the village of Wéris, about 10 km from Durbuy, is the largest concentration of megalithic monuments in Belgium. They are dolmens, which were burial chambers made of large stone slabs, and menhirs, upright standing stones. The remains are spread over a strip of more than 8 km and are generally dated to around 3000 BC.
The most visited is the Wéris I dolmen, by the road just northwest of the village. Wéris II, also called d'Oppagne dolmen, lies to the southwest. Excavations at Wéris II uncovered human bones, pottery and flint tools. Along the way there are isolated menhirs and groups of stones, such as the menhirs d'Oppagne and the menhir Danthine.
In the village center, the Maison des Mégalithes explains who the peoples were that raised these stones, how the slabs were transported and what is known about the funerary rituals. It's worth stopping there before heading out into the fields.
The village of Wéris itself, with stone houses and the Romanesque church Sainte-Walburge, is part of the association Plus Beaux Villages de Wallonie.

Practical information
Cidade Turismo reviews its information regularly, but something may have changed. Check with the place before planning your trip.
How much time to set aside
Two to three hours for the Maison des Mégalithes, the two main dolmens and some menhirs, driving from one point to another.
Best time
In the morning or late afternoon, when low light highlights the texture of the stones. In spring and summer the surrounding fields are green; in winter the short days limit the outing.
How to get there
By car it's about 10 km from Durbuy, via the roads passing through Barvaux. There is no frequent public transport to the village. The dolmens have small pull-off areas at the roadside.
Tip
Pick up the site map at the Maison des Mégalithes before setting out, because the menhirs are scattered across the fields. Check the Maison's opening hours, which change with the season. Bring footwear suitable for wet grass.
