About Musée ducal

The Musée ducal occupies protected buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries in the centre of Bouillon, near the climb up to the castle. The name recalls the former duchy of Bouillon, which remained semi-independent until it was annexed by revolutionary France in 1795.

The collection is divided into three parts. The first is dedicated to Godofredo de Bulhão and the Crusades, with objects and reconstructions about the expedition that set out in 1096. The second deals with local history and folklore, with the reconstruction of a traditional Ardennes house and the old trades of the Semois valley.

The third section shows metallurgy, especially ironwork in the 18th century. The Ardennes forests supplied charcoal for centuries that fed the forges of Valônia, and the museum explains that connection.

For those who want to go beyond the castle, it is the place that connects the fortress to the lives of the people who lived in the valley.
