About Pucará de Tilcara
Pucará de Tilcara occupies an elevation near the confluence of the Grande and Huasamayo rivers. The site gathers remains of a pre‑Hispanic settlement associated with the populations of the Quebrada de Humahuaca. Its position allows observation of the valley and helps to understand the strategic value of the place.
Stone walls, enclosures and reconstructed sectors show aspects of the settlement's organization. The visit should distinguish historic remains from elements added by later research and interpretation work. The monument to the archaeologists, for example, belongs to the site's modern history.
The route climbs along visitor paths and requires footwear suitable for dirt and stone surfaces. Avoid walking on the walls or entering areas without authorization. Combine the visit with the nearby botanical garden, leaving breaks for the altitude and for observing the terrain. The archaeological museum in the center complements the reading of the site.
