A region to enjoy
at your own pace.

San Salvador de Jujuy has the regional access airport and a historic center organized around Plaza Belgrano. The cathedral, the Cabildo and the Casa de Gobierno tell parts of the province's history. Museums and Parque Xibi Xibi allow visitors to get to know the capital before heading to the mountains.

Purmamarca sits next to the Cerro de los Siete Colores. The Paseo de los Colorados shows another face of the rock layers, while the church brings visitors closer to adobe architecture. Along Ruta Nacional 52, the town also serves as a starting point for excursions to the Salinas Grandes.

Tilcara combines the Pucará and the botanical garden with museums in the center. Humahuaca concentrates its historic ensemble around the church, the Cabildo and the stairway of the Monumento a los Héroes de la Independencia. The road to the Hornocal viewpoint adds a higher-altitude visit to the itinerary.

Road distances and altitude changes affect the pace. From April to November it generally rains less; between December and March rains are more frequent and routes should be planned according to local conditions.

Before you go

Practical information

A little planning leaves more time to enjoy the journey.

When to go

From April to November it usually rains less in the Quebrada. Between June and August nights can be cold even after mild days. From December to March rains are more frequent. Warm clothing and sun protection should be part of your luggage in any month.

The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.

How many days to stay

Plan five to seven days: one in San Salvador, one or two in Purmamarca, two in Tilcara and one or two in Humahuaca. Allocate separate outings for the Salinas Grandes and the Hornocal. The hike to Tilcara's Garganta del Diablo also requires a period separate from urban visits.

Which city to stay in

In San Salvador, the center near Plaza Belgrano makes museums and dining convenient. Purmamarca offers a compact base for walking and trips to the salares. Tilcara allows alternating archaeology, museums and road excursions. In Humahuaca, staying close to the central squares reduces travel for the historic itinerary; the trip to Hornocal requires transport.

Respect the place

Take your trash with you, follow the signs and support local businesses. In natural areas, follow the visiting guidelines.
