About Salinas Grandes
The Salinas Grandes occupy a salt plain between Jujuy and Salta, at around 3,450 meters above sea level. From Purmamarca, the road climbs the Cuesta de Lipán before reaching the salar. The contrast between the bright surface, distant landforms and the open expanse characterizes the place.
Salt is also part of the work and life of local communities. The visitor areas allow you to observe the crust and, depending on the authorized route, extraction areas and channels. The surface does not always look the same: water, moisture and crystallization depend on the conditions at each time.
Set aside a dedicated trip to the salar, with round-trip transport. The ascent requires time to acclimatize to the altitude and luggage with warm clothing, water and sun protection. At the access point on Ruta Nacional 52, ask about the circuits organized by the communities and walk only in the sectors indicated for visitors.
