About Mirador de la Serranía de Hornocal
The viewpoint of the Serranía de Hornocal is about 27 km from Humahuaca, along an uphill road. The view faces a sequence of folded rock layers, with chevron shapes and different hues. The visit focuses on the observation point, not on an ascent to the ridges of the range.
The contrast between the strata allows recognition of the pattern that made Hornocal famous as the hill of fourteen colors. The intensity of the tones changes with light and weather. The observation area is around 4,350 meters above sea level, well above the departure town, so the outing should not be rushed.
Arrange round-trip transport and check the route before driving up. Bring warm clothing even on mild days in the center and move slowly upon arrival. Stay within the area designated for visitors, without attempting other framing from the slopes. The viewing itself may be brief, but the travel and acclimatization to altitude deserve their own time.
