About Lago Roca

Lago Roca is located approximately fifty kilometers from El Calafate, in the southern sector of Parque Nacional Los Glaciares. Its surroundings show the meeting point between the Patagonian steppe and the lenga and ñire forest, with mountains in the background and visiting trails along the shore.

The area offers coastal walks and access to trails of varying difficulty. It is an outing different from the glacier boardwalks: the focus is on the relationship between water, vegetation and terrain. Camping facilities also attract those who prefer to stay longer in this part of the park.

Choose the shore sector and route in advance, since the roads and distances are not the same as the visit to Perito Moreno. From November to March the longer daylight usually makes planning easier. Bring water and food for the outing and check the road conditions; fishing and other activities have their own rules.

Practical information

Cidade Turismo reviews its information regularly, but something may have changed. Check with the place before planning your trip.

How much time to set aside

Half a day or a full day, depending on the hike and length of stay.

Best time

From November to March the longer days help organize the drive and the visit. Wind and temperature should guide the time spent by the shore.

How to get there

Access departs from El Calafate via the provincial routes that lead to the Lago Roca sector. There are stretches of gravel/unpaved road; confirm the route and the suitability of your vehicle.

Tip

Decide the hike before you leave: a visit to the shoreline does not have the same demands as a climb up the nearby hills.
