About Schillers Wohnhaus
Friedrich Schiller bought this house on today’s Schillerstraße in March 1802 and moved in with his family at the end of April that year. It was the only property he ever owned. He lived there until his death on 9 May 1805, in the study on the top floor.
The visit covers three floors. On the ground floor are the kitchen and service rooms; on the first floor, Charlotte Schiller’s and the children’s quarters; on the top floor, the reception rooms and the study, with much of the original furniture, including the desk and the bed used by the writer during his final illness.
It was in this house that Schiller wrote William Tell, the play about the Swiss hero. Panels describe the writer’s life and work and the history of the house. Next door, the Schiller-Museum building, built in the 1980s, hosts temporary exhibitions.
The house is part of the World Heritage Site of the Classicism of Weimar and is a few minutes from Goethe’s house, making it possible to visit both in the same period.
