About Bauhaus-Museum Weimar
The Staatliches Bauhaus, a school of art, architecture and design that changed the way objects and housing were designed in the 20th century, was founded in Weimar in 1919 by Walter Gropius. The sites associated with the Bauhaus in Weimar and Dessau have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996.
The Bauhaus-Museum Weimar operates in a rectilinear building designed by architect Heike Hanada, next to the Weimarhallenpark. The collection comes from the school’s holdings gathered in Weimar, including Gropius’s collection.
The permanent exhibition, Das Bauhaus kommt aus Weimar, presents the school’s central questions, its ideas and design proposals, and discusses how they still influence the way we live today. It features design pieces and everyday objects created by students and teachers, as well as documents on the school’s teaching.
The museum is near the Museum Neues Weimar and complements a visit to the city’s classical side with its modern side.
