About Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier

The Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier is one of the leading archaeological museums in Germany. There are about 4,500 objects in 3,500 square meters, covering 200,000 years of the region's history, with emphasis on the period when Trier was a Roman capital.

The collection of Roman mosaics is considered the largest north of the Alps, with whole floors from wealthy 3rd-century houses, such as the Monnus mosaic. A model of the city shows how Augusta Treverorum looked in the 4th century, helping to understand the monuments seen on the street.

One of the best-known pieces is the Neumagener Weinschiff, a sculpture of a boat loaded with wine barrels that topped the tomb of a merchant, around the year 220. It was found in Neumagen, on the Mosela, and shows how wine trade was already important in the region.

The Trier gold treasure, found in 1993 near the Römerbrücke, contains more than 2,600 Roman gold coins, weighing 18.5 kilograms, and is presented as the largest hoard of Roman gold coins ever found. The museum also has space for temporary exhibitions.
