About Museum Karl-Marx-Haus
Karl Marx was born on 5 May 1818 in this house on Brückenstraße, built in 1727 in Trier's Baroque style. The family lived there only a short time, but the house became linked to the name of the philosopher, economist and author of Das Kapital.
The German Social Democratic Party bought the property in 1928 to turn it into a memorial. During the Nazi period the house was seized, and after the Second World War it returned to the party. Today the museum is maintained by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, associated with German social democracy.
The permanent exhibition, in three parts, covers Marx's life, his ideas and their influence up to the present day, including the regimes that used his name. The tone is informative, with documents, first editions and personal objects, such as a reading chair and a pocket watch. The house also has a small garden.
The museum receives visitors from around the world, and most of its public comes from outside Germany.
