About Handwerkerhof
The Handwerkerhof, the artisans' courtyard, occupies an old defensive courtyard built within Nuremberg's last city wall, beside the Königstor tower. It opened in 1971 for the 500th anniversary of Albrecht Dürer's birth as a one-year attraction, and ended up staying.
The half-timbered houses contain workshops where you can watch the work of goldsmiths, ceramists, tin craftsmen, doll makers and Lebkuchen confectioners. There are also shops selling wooden and tin toys and small restaurants serving the city's Rostbratwürste, beer and wine da Francônia.
The courtyard is on the route for those arriving by train: just cross the street in front of the Nürnberg Hauptbahnhof. In December, during the Christkindlesmarkt, it is decorated and sees increased activity.
