About Albrecht-Dürer-Haus
Albrecht Dürer, the greatest artist of the German Renaissance, was born in Nuremberg in 1471. In 1509 he bought this house beside the Tiergärtnertor square and lived and worked here until his death in 1528. The building, dating from around 1420, has five floors, with sandstone walls on the lower two and timber framing above.
The house has been a museum since 1871 and is part of the city's museums. The rooms show how a well-off artisan family lived at the time, and the reconstructed workshop includes demonstrations of printmaking. The upper floor houses exhibitions of Dürer's prints, and an annex displays historical copies of his paintings.
Visits can be done with an audio guide. One of the guided tours is led by an actress playing Agnes Dürer, the artist's wife, who tells the story of life in the house. The upper floors are only reached by stairs.
