Approximate road distances. Check flights and bus schedules before you travel.
Check before buying. From Frankfurt (FRA), the ICE to Freiburg (Breisgau) Hauptbahnhof takes about two hours. Another gateway is Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg airport, on the French side of the border, with buses to Freiburg station. The station is roughly 1 km from the Münsterplatz.
How many days
Two days are enough for the center, the Schlossberg and a trip to the Schauinsland. With three days you have an extra day for Titisee and Triberg. Freiburg is a good base for exploring the southern Black Forest by train and bus.
When to go
From May to October is best for the trails, Lake Titisee and the viewpoints; in September and October there is the grape harvest on the region's slopes. In winter it is cold: higher areas like Schauinsland and Feldberg usually have snow, and the Christmas market typically runs from the end of November until close to Christmas.
The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.
Do you need a car?
For getting around the city you don't need a car: the center is pedestrian and trams link the station to the neighborhoods. Regional trains go to Titisee and Triberg, and tram and bus serve the Schauinsland cable car. Many hotels in the region issue the KONUS card, which covers regional public transport; confirm when booking. Freiburg has an environmental zone (Umweltzone) for cars.

Frequently asked questions
Is Freiburg a good base for visiting the Black Forest?
Yes. Regional trains depart from the central station to Titisee and to Triberg, and tram and bus serve the Schauinsland cable car. Many hotels in the region issue the KONUS card, which covers regional public transport; confirm when booking.
Can you go from Freiburg to France and Switzerland?
Yes. Colmar, in the French Alsace, and Basileia, in Switzerland, are less than an hour away by train or bus. Switzerland is not part of the European Union, but it is in the Schengen area; carry your passport.
What are the Bächle?
They are narrow water channels that run along the streets of the Altstadt since the Middle Ages. They were used to supply the town and fight fires. Local tradition says that whoever accidentally steps into a Bächle will marry someone from Freiburg.
When does the Münsterplatz market operate?
Monday to Saturday, in the morning until early afternoon. There is no market on Sundays. Check opening times before you go.
What is the best day to visit Titisee and Triberg together?
A full day, preferably on a weekday. The two are on different train lines, so it’s easier to combine regional trains and buses. Check the timetables on Deutsche Bahn before you set out.
