Rüdesheim am Rhein – Hesse Destination Frankfurt and the Rhine Valley

How to get there

  • Flughafen Frankfurt am Main (FRA) Frankfurt · 60 km
  • Rüdesheim (Rhein) 1 km

Approximate road distances. Check flights and bus schedules before you travel.

Confirm before buying. From Frankfurt you can take the train: the regional train departs Frankfurt central station and arrives at Rüdesheim (Rhein) station in a little over an hour, without changes. From Frankfurt Airport (FRA) it’s about 60 km by road. A ferry links the town to Bingen on the opposite bank.

How many days

One day is enough to see the Drosselgasse, the Niederwalddenkmal and the mechanical music museum, including a short boat trip. Staying overnight leaves time for the Abtei St. Hildegard, the vineyard trails and to continue the next day to Bacharach or the Loreley.

When to go

From April to October the regular boats and the cable car operate, and the taverns fill up at night. Grape harvest runs from September to October. The town’s Christmas market usually runs from late November until near Christmas. In winter, from December to February, many places have reduced opening hours.

The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.

Do you need a car?

No. The town is small and is explored on foot; the train station is next to the center and the cable car takes you up to the Niederwald. To travel along the valley use regional trains, which run on both banks, or the boats in season. There is no bridge over the Rhine until Koblenz: the crossing to Bingen is by ferry.
