About Neumarkt
The Neumarkt is the square surrounding the Frauenkirche, in the heart of Dresden’s Altstadt (old town). For centuries it was the neighborhood of merchants and wealthy residents, with Baroque-fronted houses built side by side.
The 1945 bombings left the area almost empty, and for decades it was a large open wasteland. After the church was rebuilt, the blocks around it were reconstructed gradually, many with façades that replicate the historic houses and modern interiors. The result is a square that looks old, but was mostly rebuilt in recent decades.
Around it are the statue of Martinho Lutero in front of the church, the Verkehrsmuseum (transport museum) building in the old Johanneum and several streets leading to the Brühlsche Terrasse, the Fürstenzug and the Residenzschloss. Cafés and restaurants with outdoor tables fill up on summer evenings.
On special dates, such as the Christmas period, the square usually hosts themed markets, in addition to the Striezelmarkt, which takes place on the Altmarkt a few minutes away.
