About Kreuzkirche
The Kreuzkirche (Igreja da Santa Cruz) stands on the Altmarkt, Dresden's old market square. The current church dates from the 18th century: it was rebuilt after being damaged by Prussian cannon fire in the Seven Years' War.
In February 1945 the church burned during the bombings. Reopened in 1955, it was given an intentionally simple interior, with raw plaster walls that evoke the destruction and contrast with the Baroque façade.
It is home to the Dresdner Kreuzchor, a boys' choir with more than seven centuries of history, which usually sings at Saturday vespers and in concerts throughout the year. At Christmas time the choir concerts are very popular.
The tower can be climbed via wide stairs, with a narrower final section. The observation gallery sits just above the clocks and offers views of the Altmarkt, the Frauenkirche and the river.
