About Warnemünde

Warnemünde is Rostock's seaside district, where the Warnow river meets the Baltic Sea. It was a fishing village and became a seaside resort, while keeping the Alter Strom, the original branch of the estuary, today lined with fishing boats, cafés, restaurants and shops.

The beach has over three kilometres of sand without stones and reaches 150 metres in width, the widest on the German Baltic coast. The bathing season usually runs from June to August, with cold water. On the sand are the wicker beach chairs with hoods (Strandkorb), rented by period.

Near the lighthouse is the Teepott, a 1968 building with a shell-shaped concrete roof by engineer Ulrich Müther, now housing restaurants. The breakwaters at the port entrance end in two small lighthouses, one green and one red, and are a popular walk to watch ships.

On the west bank of the Neuer Strom is the cruise terminal, the busiest in Germany. A fisherman's house from 1767 houses the local museum, about fishing, navigation and the history of the seaside resort.
