About Schweriner Schloss

Schweriner Schloss is located on an island in Schwerin, the capital of Mecklemburgo-Pomerânia Ocidental, about an hour by train from Rostock. It was the main residence of the dukes and grand dukes of Mecklemburgo-Schwerin.

The present palace, with towers, domes and a gilded dome above the entrance, was rebuilt between 1843 and 1857 in the neo-Renaissance style, inspired by the château of Chambord in France. A fire in 1913 destroyed around a third of the building.

Part of the palace is a museum, with state rooms, the throne room and art collections. Since 1990 the building has also housed the Landtag, the state's parliament. In 2024 the residential ensemble of Schwerin was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

On the island itself is the Burggarten, with the orangerie, and adjacent to it stretches the Schlossgarten, a landscaped park designed by Peter Joseph Lenné.
