About Neuer Markt

The Neuer Markt was one of the three market squares of medieval Rostock and the city's economic center. The court, the pillory and the houses of the wealthiest merchants were located there.

On the east side stands the Rathaus, with origins in the 13th century. The medieval brick section, with seven small towers at the top, is partially hidden behind a pink Baroque façade added in the 18th century.

On the opposite side, the houses with gabled façades were renovated over the centuries in Baroque, Classical and Historicist styles. The house at number 16 has the oldest façade, Renaissance, dating from 1600. Part of the square was destroyed in the April 1942 bombings, and the north side received new buildings.

The square became a pedestrian zone and is crossed by trams. At the end of the year it usually hosts part of the Christmas market.
