About Kröpeliner Straße
Kröpeliner Straße is Rostock's main shopping street, about 650 metres long. It became a pedestrian zone in 1968, one of the first in the former East Germany. Locals call it Kröpi.
Midway is the Universitätsplatz, the square of the University of Rostock, founded in 1419 and one of the oldest in northern Europe. The university's main building closes one side of the square, and in the centre is the Brunnen der Lebensfreude fountain, with bronze figures.
At the western end stands the Kröpeliner Tor, a brick Gothic gate about 54 metres high, part of the 13th–14th century city walls. From there a preserved stretch of walls and the park that runs alongside them extends.
The street features merchants' houses with gabled façades, restored, mixed with post‑war buildings.
