About Dom zu Lübeck
The Dom de Lübeck was founded in 1173 by Henry the Lion, duke of Saxony and Bavaria and founder of the city, and consecrated in 1247. It stands at the southern end of the Altstadt, away from the commercial centre, in a quieter area near the Mühlenteich lake.
At almost 132 meters long, it is one of the city's longest churches. The two towers and the nave show the transition from Romanesque to Gothic, and the choir was extended in the Gothic style in the 14th century.
The best-known piece is the triumphal cross by Bernt Notke, a carver from Lübeck, erected in the nave in 1477. The ensemble is about 17 metres high, featuring Christ, Mary, John, Adam, Eve and the bishop who commissioned it.
The Dom was also hit in the 1942 bombing and rebuilt in the following decades. The towers are undergoing restoration work in several phases.
