About Café Niederegger
Lübeck is known in Germany as the marzipan city, a sweet made of almond and sugar. The best-known brand is Niederegger, founded on March 1, 1806 by Johann Georg Niederegger, a confectioner who settled in the city.
The main house is on Breite Straße, right opposite the town hall. The ground floor houses the shop, with marzipan in bars, modeled fruits and seasonal figures. The café occupies the upper floors and serves, among other sweets, the house's marzipan walnut cake.
On the top floor there is an exhibition about marzipan, with the history of the sweet, which arrived in Europe from the East, and life-size marzipan figures.
The visit is quick and works as a break between the town hall and the Marienkirche.
