About Schloss Benrath

Schloss Benrath was built between 1755 and 1771 for the prince-elector Carl Theodor do Palatinado, to a design by the French architect Nicolas de Pigage. It is a maison de plaisance—a leisure and hunting palace—planned as a unit together with the gardens, the lakes and the park that stretches to the Reno.

From the outside the main building, the Corps de Logis, looks like it has only one and a half stories, but inside it has four floors and about 80 rooms, connected to the side wings by underground passages. Highlights include the entrance hall and the domed salon.

The complex houses three museums: the palace museum in the Corps de Logis, a museum of garden art and a natural history museum. The park, with long avenues and reflective ponds, is open and widely used for walks. Guided tours of the palace are offered, including some in English; check the program before you go.
