About Rheinuferpromenade
The Rheinuferpromenade is the riverside promenade along the Rhine in Düsseldorf, between the Altstadt, the Carlstadt and the port quarter. A promenade had existed since the early 20th century, but after World War II a multi-lane avenue separated the city from the river.
In the 1990s the avenue was put into a tunnel, the Rheinufertunnel, and the riverbank was redesigned for pedestrians. The new promenade opened in 1995 and became the place where locals and visitors stroll, run, cycle and sit to watch the river.
The stairway by Burgplatz fills up on sunny days. Heading south, the promenade passes cafés with outdoor seating and reaches the Rheinturm, the state parliament and the MedienHafen. On the opposite bank lies the Oberkassel neighborhood and the sequence of the city's bridges.
