About Schokoladenmuseum

The Schokoladenmuseum is located on a peninsula of the Rheinauhafen, the old port on the Reno, south of the old town. It was opened in 1993 by chocolate manufacturer Hans Imhoff, owner of the former Stollwerck, and today has the Swiss maker Lindt as a partner.

The exhibition covers about 5,000 years of cocoa and chocolate history: it starts with a model cacao tree, passes through a 10-meter-high tropical greenhouse, and continues through the trade and transport of cocoa to a small glass-enclosed factory where chocolate production can be seen.

The building combines old port structures, such as the 1898 Prussian customs house, with a modern ship-shaped wing. The museum café overlooks the river and the shop sells chocolate. It is one of the most popular visits for families with children.
