About Hohenzollernbrücke
The Hohenzollernbrücke links Colônia’s central station with Deutz station on the other side of the Reno. It was built between 1907 and 1911, aligned with the cathedral’s axis, and is one of Germany’s busiest railway bridges, with hundreds of trains a day.
During World War II the bridge was destroyed. After 1945 only the railway section was rebuilt, and pedestrian and cycle walkways were added on the sides. At the approaches there are equestrian statues of Prussian emperors and kings.
The railings between the tracks and the walkway are covered with locks left by couples. The walk across takes just a few minutes and, on the Deutz side, the riverbank offers the classic view of the cathedral framed by the bridge, especially at dusk and at night when it’s illuminated.

Practical information
Cidade Turismo reviews its information regularly, but something may have changed. Check with the place before planning your trip.
How much time to set aside
15 to 30 minutes to cross at a relaxed pace and take photos.
Best time
Late afternoon and at night, when the cathedral and the bridge are lit. The best-known view is from the Deutz bank, looking toward the cathedral.
How to get there
It starts behind the cathedral, beside the central station. On the Deutz side you descend to the riverbank and to the Rheinpark.
Tip
Trains run right next to the walkway and are noisy; that’s part of the experience. Combine the crossing with the KölnTriangle observation platform or a stroll through the Rheinpark, both on the Deutz side.
