About Deutsches Weihnachtsmuseum
The Deutsches Weihnachtsmuseum is on the upper floor of the Käthe Wohlfahrt Christmas shop on Herrngasse, near the Marktplatz. The company started in the 1960s and settled in Rothenburg in 1977 with a shop open year-round, decorated like a Christmas village.
The museum explains how the year-end festivities developed in Germany: the decorated Christmas tree, blown-glass ornaments, wooden figures from the Ore Mountains, Advent calendars, cards and figures of Saint Nicholas. Most of the pieces are from the 19th century and the early 20th century.
Rothenburg's market, called Reiterlesmarkt, usually runs from late November until just before Christmas.
