About Ludwigstraße
Ludwigstraße is the main axis of the old village of Partenkirchen. It follows the route of the Roman road that linked the Brenner Pass to Augsburg, and Partenkirchen was already a market town and seat of a court in the 13th century. The historic stretch is protected as a heritage ensemble.
Two major fires, in 1811 and 1865, destroyed most of the old houses. The street was rebuilt in the 19th century and, at the beginning of the 20th century, received façade paintings in the Alpine style called Lüftlmalerei, as well as balconies and iron signs. Few buildings predating the fires survived.
In the middle of the street, on a terrace, stands the church of Mariä Himmelfahrt, in neo-Gothic style. At the other end, the small chapel of São Sebastião marks the site of an old Roman post. Today the street concentrates traditional restaurants, breweries and shops.
