About Bodegas Castillo Viejo
Castillo Viejo is at km 24 on Ruta 68, on the outskirts of Las Piedras, less than 2 km from Pizzorno. It was founded in 1927 by the Etcheverry family and is now run by the third and fourth generations.
The name comes from a legend from Hasparren, a village in the Pyrenees from which the family came: it was said that from the top of the oldest castle tower one could spot the New World. The winery works with grapes from selected vineyards in several regions of Uruguay, with sandy, limestone, clay and granitic soils, and the harvest is done by hand.
The visit is held in small groups, guided by a sommelier, and a family member usually tells the story of the estate. The route passes through the vineyard, the fermentation area and the bottling line and ends in the century-old cellar, where the tasting is served with a board of cheeses, cured meats and artisanal breads.
There are more complete tasting options, with wines from the family's archive, and paired lunches, all by reservation.
