About Bodega Bouza

Bodega Bouza is located on Camino de la Redención, in Melilla, the rural area of Montevidéu, bordering Canelones. The family started in wine in 1998 when they bought a 35-year-old vineyard in Las Violetas, Canelones. In 2001 they acquired the Melilla property, where an old bodega had operated in the 1950s and 1960s, and restored it.

Of Galician roots, the family planted Albariño and Tempranillo. Albariño was new to Uruguay: the first hectare was planted in 2001, with the first harvest in 2004, and the grape adapted so well that it spread to other wineries. Today Bouza has vineyards in Montevidéu, Canelones and Maldonado.

The winery is open every day, with guided tours at various times. The restaurant serves regional and international dishes with Uruguayan and Spanish influence, à la carte or in a seven-course tasting menu.

Part of the visit takes place in the bodega’s garage, where classic cars and motorcycles from Juan Bouza’s collection are displayed. A tasting of four wines with four small bites is also served there.
