About Antigua Bodega Stagnari

La Antigua Bodega is at km 20 of Ruta 5, in Santos Lugares, in the city of La Paz. It was built in 1928 and still belongs to the same family, which carries stories of Italian immigrants: the Stagnari, from Ancona, and the Moise, from Turim. At the entrance stands the windmill the Moise erected to draw water from the well when they arrived—there was no electricity or running water then.

Héctor Nelson Stagnari took over the bodega after marrying Mariana Moise in 1955. Today the winery is run by Virginia Stagnari, the fifth generation, with her children Mariana, the winemaker, and Carlo, responsible for the vineyard.

The land is the house’s hallmark. In Santos Lugares the subsoil is decomposing pink granite, known as granito de La Paz, estimated to be 500 to 600 million years old. There Merlot and Sangiovese are grown; other grapes come from vineyards on the banks of the río Santa Lucía, in Melilla.

Experiences include a guided tour of the vineyards and the bodega and a tasting of four to six wines with cheeses, dried fruits and homemade empanadas. Lunches are available by prior reservation for groups.
