About Teatro Larrañaga
Teatro Larrañaga is Salto's main stage. It was built with funds raised by the townspeople themselves, who in less than a week sold shares to finance the work. The plans were by the English engineer Roberto Wilkinson, of the Noroeste railway, and the inauguration took place in October 1882.
The name honors Father Dámaso Antonio Larrañaga, a figure in education in Uruguay. Italian opera and comedy companies performed on its stage as early as the 19th century. The galleries were built without supporting columns, a technical detail that local tradition still recalls today.
In 1947 the building was renovated: it received a new façade, an enlarged auditorium and a chandelier with about 20,000 crystals. In 1953 it passed to the Intendencia de Salto. In 1988 it was declared a National Historic Monument. The hall has a capacity of about 850 people.
Next to the entrance, the Pasaje Wilkinson leads to a romantic late‑19th‑century garden at the back of the theatre. The building also houses a small museum dedicated to the history of the house.
