About Casa Horacio Quiroga
Horacio Quiroga, one of the great short‑story writers of Latin America, was born in Salto in 1878. This house was one of the family's summer residences, and there he spent his childhood and part of his adolescence. Author of Tales of the Jungle and Stories of Love, Madness and Death, Quiroga lived much of his life in Misiones, Argentina.
In the 20th century the property became a public school. In 2004 it was ceded to the Intendencia de Salto and transformed into a house‑museum. In 2009 it was declared a National Historic Monument. The architecture mixes Italian, French and English elements, the result of four stages of construction.
The rooms display books, photographs and the writer's personal belongings. The mausoleum houses the urn with his ashes, carved from an algarrobo root by the Russian sculptor Stepan Erzia, in the shape of Quiroga's head. The piece arrived in Salto through the writer Enrique Amorim, a friend of Quiroga.
The house also has a room dedicated to the Salto poet Marosa di Giorgio and the Amalia Zaldúa Auditorium, used for cultural activities.
