How many days
One day is enough for the lighthouse, the beaches, Laguna José Ignacio and the bridge at Laguna Garzón. Those seeking peace can stay two or three days and use the village as a base for the coast.
When to go
From December to March is the season, with beach restaurants open and more activity in January. Outside of summer the village is quiet and some businesses close. From June to August it is cold and windy. Between July and October southern right whales usually pass along the coast.
The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.
Do you need a car?
A car is very helpful: the village is explored on foot, but Laguna José Ignacio and the Laguna Garzón bridge are outside it, and there is no regular public transport to the bridge. Regional buses run from Maldonado and Punta del Este to José Ignacio.
