About Sils/Segl
Sils, Segl in Romansh, lies at 1,809 m, about 11 km from St. Moritz, between the Silsersee and Lake Silvaplana. The village is in two parts: Sils Maria at the foot of the mountains, and Sils Baselgia by the lake.
The Silsersee is about 5 km long and sits at 1,797 m. At the northeast tip, the forested Chastè peninsula preserves remains of a medieval castle. From late June to late September, boats cross the lake to Maloja.
South of Sils Maria opens the Val Fex, a protected valley where only residents drive. Visitors go on foot, by bike or by horse-drawn carriage, and in winter by sleigh. In the valley, the little church of Fex-Crasta, dating from around 1500, has frescoes from 1511.
Friedrich Nietzsche spent summers in Sils between 1881 and 1888, and the house where he stayed is now a museum. From Sils Maria the Furtschellas cable car rises to the Corvatsch area.
