About Segantini Museum

The Segantini Museum occupies a stone rotunda with a wide dome on the slope between St. Moritz Dorf and St. Moritz Bad. It was opened in 1908 as a memorial to the painter Giovanni Segantini (1858–1899), who spent his last five years in the Engadina, in Maloja.

The shape of the building echoes the pavilion Segantini planned to display a panorama of the Engadina at the 1900 Paris Exposition. The centerpiece of the collection is the triptych of the Alps, Werden – Sein – Vergehen.

Segantini was working on the central panel on the Schafberg, above Pontresina, when he died suddenly in 1899. The museum also brings together other paintings and drawings by the artist, who depicted the light, the alpine pastures and life high in the Alps.

The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday during the winter and summer seasons, closed on Mondays and takes a break in spring; it’s worth checking the dates for the year.
