About Schiefer Turm
The Schiefer Turm, the leaning tower of St. Moritz, is what remains of the church of São Maurício, up on Dorf. An inscription on the belfry bears the date 1570, and the tower reached 33 m in height after an extension in 1672.
The hillside ground moves, and the tower began to lean. The bells were removed in 1890 to reduce weight, and the church was demolished in stages: the choir in 1856 and the nave in 1893. The tilt is about 5.5 degrees.
Throughout the 20th century the tower underwent several stabilization works, with a concrete base, 20 m anchors and ground drainage. In 1983 it received a new foundation on supports that allow correcting the tilt, and in 2013 it was straightened by 10 cm.
You cannot enter the tower: visits are from the outside, at any time. From the spot you can see the lake and the valley down below.
