About Pontresina
Pontresina, Puntraschigna in Romansh, sits at 1,805 m in a side valley about 7 km from St. Moritz, at the entrance to Val Bernina. The station, west of the village, is a stop for the Bernina Express and regional trains to St. Moritz and Tirano.
Via Maistra, the main street, has shops, hotels, restaurants and the Museum Alpin. Above the village, the church of Santa Maria, in late Romanesque style, preserves wall paintings, and next to it stands the tower Spaniola, a national heritage site.
Pontresina is a base for Diavolezza, the Morteratsch trail and Val Roseg, which in winter is reached by horse-drawn sleigh. Above the village a colony of ibex lives, often seen on the slopes.
The Alp Languard chairlift rises from the village to the hillside trails, and Lej da Staz, a bathing lake in summer, lies on the walking route to St. Moritz.
