About Muottas Muragl
Muottas Muragl is a viewpoint at 2.456 m on the slope between Samedan and Pontresina, facing the Upper Engadine valley. From the terrace you can see the valley floor, from Samedan and Celerina to St. Moritz, and the mountains across the way.
You reach it by the funicular that departs from Punt Muragl, next to the Punt Muragl Staz train stop on the Bernina line. Opened in 1907, it runs into the evening in summer, and there is a hotel and restaurants at the top.
On the slope above Pontresina is the Schafberg, where Giovanni Segantini died in 1899 while working on the Alpine triptych. The Chamanna Segantini, a hut named for the painter, sits on that slope between Muottas Muragl and Pontresina.
The funicular usually operates in summer, from June to October, and in winter, with pauses in spring and late autumn. Check the day’s operating status before you go.
