About Maloja

Maloja, Maloggia in Italian, lies at the Maloja Pass at 1,815 m, on the southwest tip of the Silsersee, about 17 km from St. Moritz. It belongs to the municipality of Bregaglia, Italian-speaking, and marks the beginning of the Upper Engadine.

From the pass the road descends in bends into the Val Bregaglia and continues to Italy. Maloja divides the waters of the Inn, which flow to the Danube, from those that descend to the Po.

The painter Giovanni Segantini lived in Maloja from 1894 until his death in 1899. The Belvedere tower has information about him, and the Atelier Segantini, his former studio, is open to visitors.

A short, family-friendly nature trail leads to the Gletschermühlen, potholes carved into the rock by glacial water. In summer, Silsersee boats reach Maloja, and in winter the frozen lake can allow skating when the ice is thick.
