About Monte Brè
Monte Brè lies east of Lugano's centre, on the opposite side to San Salvatore. Its funicular, opened in 1912, departs from the Cassarate district by the lake and climbs in two sections to the summit at about 925 metres, passing through the Suvigliana neighbourhood.
From the top, the view covers the city of Lugano, the gulf and San Salvatore opposite, the lake stretching to Italy and, on clear days, the Alps.
Near the summit is the village of Brè, a settlement of stone houses and narrow streets, with artworks spread across the streets and walls, left by artists who have worked there. Trails link the summit to the village in about 20 minutes and descend to Gandria and Castagnola.
There are restaurants and terraces at the top. Those feeling fit can walk down to Lugano along the hillside trails.
