About Gandria
Gandria is an old fishing village on the north shore of Lake Lugano, at the foot of Monte Brè, and today it is a neighborhood of the city. The historic core, of medieval origin, is pedestrian-only and spreads along a steep slope that descends to the water, with houses pressed together, narrow stair streets, arches and terraces over the lake.
The slope’s sheltered microclimate allows olive trees, cypresses and laurels to grow, and the prettiest way to get there is the Sentiero dell'Olivo, a flat trail among olive trees that starts in Castagnola, east of Parco Ciani, and follows the shore to Gandria in about an hour. Panels tell the story of olive cultivation in Ticino.
In the village there are restaurants with tables over the water and the church of San Vigilio, with a bell tower. On the opposite shore, at the Cantine di Gandria, is the Swiss Customs Museum, which tells the story of smuggling between Switzerland and Italy; boats stop there in season.
The lake’s regular boats link Gandria to Lugano center in about 30 minutes.
