About Cattedrale di San Lorenzo
The cathedral of San Lorenzo stands on a terrace between the station and Lugano's center, overlooking the roofs and the lake. There was a Christian cemetery on the site at the end of Antiquity, and the church was built in the Early Middle Ages and enlarged several times. It became a cathedral in 1888 and has been the seat of the bishop of Lugano since 1971.
The light‑colored marble façade is what makes it well known: it is Renaissance, from the early 16th century, with carved portals and a large rose window at the center. The building mixes Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance elements, a rare combination in Switzerland.
Inside, the side chapels feature frescoes and Baroque altars, and there are paintings dating from the late Middle Ages to the 18th century. The cathedral underwent a long restoration in the early 21st century and hosts concerts and choirs.
From the terrace in front of the façade you get one of the classic views of Lugano, with the lake and Monte San Salvatore. The staircase and streets that descend from there lead to the center in a few minutes.
