About Quai de Montreux et statue de Freddie Mercury
Montreux’s quay runs along the lake through the town centre, with flower beds, benches and views of the Alps on the far side of Lake Léman. The town lies on the so-called Riviera of Vaud, known for its mild climate and Belle Époque hotels.
At the end of Place du Marché, on quai de la Rouvenaz, stands the statue of Freddie Mercury, 3 metres high, by Czech sculptor Irena Sedlecká. The Queen singer recorded in Montreux at the studio the band had in the town, and spent part of his final months there. The statue shows Freddie with his fist raised, in a stage pose.
Beside the statue is the covered market at Place du Marché, an open structure that becomes part of Montreux Noël at the end of the year.
The quay continues southeast to Territet and Château de Chillon, and northwest to Clarens and Vevey. The walk from Montreux to Chillon along the waterfront is flat and takes about 40 minutes.
