About Inverness Castle
Castelo de Inverness sits on a hill above the river Ness in the city centre, on a site that has been fortified since the Middle Ages. The current red sandstone, castle‑style building was constructed between 1836 and 1848 to house the county court and prison, and it operated as a courthouse until 2020. After a lengthy renovation it reopened in 2026 as the Inverness Castle Experience, a centre dedicated to the Highlands.
The exhibition presents the region through its places, stories and people: the landscape, the clans, the Gaelic language, music and legends, with interactive galleries. The north tower and terraces offer views over the river Ness, the bridges and the city, and on clear days over the surrounding mountains. The building also concentrates information for those continuing their journey through the Highlands.
On the esplanade in front stands a statue of Flora MacDonald, who helped Carlos Eduardo Stuart escape after Culloden, disguised as a maid, to the Isle of Skye. From the top of the hill a riverside path leads to the Ness Islands, wooded islets linked by Victorian footbridges, about a 20‑minute walk away.
The castle is the natural starting point for exploring Inverness on foot. Check opening times and tickets on the website before you go.
